Do AI assistants recommend HVAC companies in Austin? (Oct 2026 test)
Short answer: yes, AI assistants do name HVAC companies in Austin, but they rarely agree on which ones. We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the same 20 HVAC questions about Austin and counted every business each answer named: 84 different businesses in 60 answers, and only 8 named by all three engines.
How we tested
On October 29, 2026, as part of an anonymized sample report for an Austin-area HVAC company (Sample B on our home page), we sent each question below to three AI engines through their official APIs, with web search switched on: ChatGPT (OpenAI gpt-4o-mini with web search), Perplexity (sonar) and Gemini (gemini-3.8-flash with Google Search grounding). 20 questions × 3 engines = 60 answers. We saved every answer word for word, counted every business each answer named, merged name variants of the same company, and recounted on November 2, 2026.
Read this as a snapshot, not a ranking. Each question was asked once. AI answers change by date, wording and location, and the apps you use on your phone can answer differently from the APIs. Being named by an AI is not an endorsement from us, and we have not checked the ratings or claims the AIs repeated.

What stood out
- Little agreement between engines. ChatGPT named 57 different businesses, Perplexity 38 and Gemini 22: 84 in total, and only 8 of them were named by all three.
- One name came up most. The Coolest LLC was named in 28 of 60 answers (16 of Gemini’s 20) and listed first in 17.
- ChatGPT leaned on Google Maps. In all 20 of its answers, ChatGPT linked the businesses it named to Google Maps listings (all 146 of its links).
- Perplexity cited directories and review sites. Its most-cited sources included siftpros.com (11 of 20 answers), consumeraffairs.com (9), bbb.org (7) and yelp.com (6), next to HVAC companies’ own websites. For “who do locals recommend for AC repair in Austin”, it also cited Reddit.
- Gemini leaned on companies’ own websites. It cited thecoolestservice.com in 15 of its 20 answers, alamoaustinair.com in 14 and stansac.com in 13.
- A real Austin-area HVAC company was almost invisible. The sample business behind this test was named in 2 of 60 answers, both by ChatGPT; Perplexity and Gemini never named it.
“Before hiring, verify the contractor’s current Texas HVAC license and ask whether diagnostic fees apply, what work is included, and whether the proposed repair or replacement is necessary.”
Perplexity, asked “compare HVAC companies in Austin” on Oct 29, 2026
“Their websites advertise 24/7 emergency service, but tonight’s availability depends on dispatch, so confirm an arrival estimate and any after-hours fee by phone.”
Perplexity, asked “Austin HVAC technician that comes out tonight” on Oct 29, 2026
“Almost all companies charge an after-hours trip fee to send a technician out at night; verify whether this fee applies toward the repair.”
Gemini, asked “Austin HVAC technician that comes out tonight” on Oct 29, 2026
How to get your HVAC business named by AI in Austin
No one can guarantee an AI will recommend you. These steps improve the public signals the answers above relied on.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. ChatGPT linked every business it named to a Google Maps listing. Choose accurate HVAC categories, list AC repair, emergency repair, installation and maintenance as services, and mark 24/7 hours only if they are true.
- Make your own website answer the question. Gemini cited the named companies’ own websites most often. Have clear pages for AC repair, emergency service and installation in Austin and the suburbs you serve.
- Be present where Perplexity looked: SiftPros, ConsumerAffairs, BBB and Yelp, with the same business name, address and phone everywhere.
- Publish the facts the AIs told homeowners to check: your Texas HVAC license number, diagnostic and after-hours fees, whether you can come the same day, and your service area.
- Earn reviews that mention the job and the area, such as an AC repair in a specific Austin neighborhood.
- Re-check every month. Ask the questions your customers ask and note who is named. Answers change.
