  3. Which plumbers AI recommends

Which plumbers does AI recommend? What ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini said (Nov 2026)

AI answers collected: November 2, 2026 · Published by: AskAI Local, Florida · Engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini

When a homeowner asks an AI assistant who to call for a burst pipe or a new water heater, the answer usually names a short list of companies. We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini two common plumbing questions in Phoenix, Charlotte and Denver and wrote down exactly who they named and which sources they relied on.

How we tested

On November 2, 2026 (10:15–10:18 AM ET), we sent each question below to three AI engines through their official APIs, with web search switched on: ChatGPT (OpenAI gpt-4o-mini with web search), Perplexity (sonar) and Gemini (gemini-3.8-flash with Google Search grounding). 6 questions × 3 engines = 18 answers. We saved every answer word for word and counted which businesses each one named.

Read this as a snapshot, not a ranking. Each question was asked once. AI answers change by date, wording and location, and the apps you use on your phone can answer differently from the APIs. Being named by an AI is not an endorsement from us, and we have not checked the ratings or claims the AIs repeated.

The questions:

  • Who is the best emergency plumber in Phoenix, AZ?
  • Who is the best emergency plumber in Charlotte, NC?
  • Who is the best emergency plumber in Denver, CO?
  • Which plumber should I call for a water heater replacement in Phoenix, AZ?
  • Which plumber should I call for a water heater replacement in Charlotte, NC?
  • Which plumber should I call for a water heater replacement in Denver, CO?

Who the AI named, city by city

Businesses named in at least 2 of the 6 answers for each city (2 questions × 3 engines). Many more were named once.

What stood out

  • The three engines rarely agreed. In Charlotte, WyattWorks Plumbing was the one business we found named by all three engines. In Phoenix and Denver, we found no business named by all three. Being visible in one AI tool does not mean you are visible in the others.
  • ChatGPT leaned on Google Maps. In all 6 of its answers, the ChatGPT model linked each business it named to a Google Maps listing. Your Google Business Profile is likely what it reads.
  • Perplexity and Gemini cited websites and directories. Their most-cited sources included rotorooter.com (8 answers), and mrrooter.com, bbb.org, thumbtack.com, consumeraffairs.com and benjaminfranklinplumbing.com (4 answers each), plus individual plumbers’ own websites.
  • They repeated the facts businesses publish: 24/7 availability, licensing, upfront or flat-rate pricing, same-day service and years in business.
  • Check the details. In one Phoenix answer, the ChatGPT model gave two different businesses the identical “5.0★ rating from 909 Google reviews”. Treat ratings quoted by an AI as a lead to verify, not a fact.

The engines also gave sensible advice to homeowners:

“There isn’t a definitive “best” for every job, so I’d call and confirm ETA, dispatch fee, and the after-hours price before authorizing work.”

Perplexity, asked “Who is the best emergency plumber in Phoenix, AZ?” on Nov 2, 2026

“Ask each for a written, itemized quote covering the unit, removal and disposal, permit/code work, and any changes to venting or connections.”

Perplexity, asked “Which plumber should I call for a water heater replacement in Charlotte, NC?” on Nov 2, 2026

“…you need a licensed plumber familiar with high-altitude venting requirements, local municipal permitting, and the mineral buildup common with Front Range water.”

Gemini, asked “Which plumber should I call for a water heater replacement in Denver, CO?” on Nov 2, 2026

How to get your plumbing business named by AI

No one can guarantee an AI will recommend you. These steps improve the public signals the answers above relied on.

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile. Use “Plumber” as the primary category, add every service you offer (emergency plumbing, water heater replacement, drain cleaning), set accurate hours and mark 24/7 only if it is true.
  2. Get reviews that name the job and the city. A review that says “replaced our water heater in Denver the same day” gives an AI something specific to repeat.
  3. Publish the facts the AIs quoted. On your own website, state your license number, service area, emergency hours, how you price (flat-rate, upfront) and years in business, on a page for each main service.
  4. Fix your directory listings. Make sure your name, address and phone match on BBB, Thumbtack, ConsumerAffairs, Yelp and other directories the AIs cite.
  5. Add structured data. LocalBusiness and FAQ schema on your site help machines read your services and service area.
  6. Re-check every month. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your customers ask and note who they name. Answers change.

Does AI name your business?

Run the free self-check: we ask Perplexity 3 questions your customers ask and show whether it named you, who it named instead and which sites it cited. No email needed. The full $79 AI Visibility Report asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini 20 questions each and adds a Visibility Score and 10 fixes.
